Questions & Answers
Everything you might want to know about choosing, fitting, installing and caring for wall plates, and about ordering from Rio Salto. Can't find your answer? Email us at contact@riosalto.com and we'll help.
Choosing the right plate
Three things: what's on your wall (toggle switches, rocker switches, outlets, or a mix), how many sit side by side (the gang count), and the size of plate you want (Standard or Midsize). Once you know those, choose the collection and finish you love.
Our Shop by Configuration page lets you start from what's on your wall.
- Toggle: a small rectangular opening for the classic flip-up, flip-down switch.
- Rocker: a larger rectangular opening for flat paddle switches, many dimmers and smart switches, and GFCI outlets.
- Outlet (duplex): two rounded openings for a standard two-plug outlet.
- Blank: no opening. It covers an unused electrical box.
- Combination: mixes openings on one plate, for example a toggle beside an outlet.
A gang is one switch or outlet position. Count the devices sitting side by side in one box: one switch is 1-gang (1G), two switches next to each other is 2-gang (2G), and so on. We make 1-gang to 4-gang plates.
On a combination plate, count every position. A toggle next to an outlet is a 2-gang combo.
Usually, yes. These devices generally share the same rectangular rocker opening:
- GFCI outlets (the ones with Test and Reset buttons): use a rocker plate.
- Paddle, slide and touch dimmers, and most smart switches: use a rocker plate.
- Rotary (knob) dimmers: most are built to fit a toggle plate.
- USB outlets: rectangular rocker-style ones use a rocker plate. Ones shaped like a regular two-plug outlet use a duplex plate.
If you're not sure, compare the opening on your current plate, or send us a photo.
Not at the moment. Our range covers toggle, rocker, outlet, blank and combination plates. A blank plate can cover a box you no longer use.
No. We make the wall plate itself, which comes with its mounting screws. Your existing switches and outlets stay in place.
Absolutely. Many people keep one style throughout for a calm, consistent look, and others choose a more decorative plate for a powder room, entry or bedroom. A good rule of thumb is to keep plates within one room consistent and let them echo another finish in the space, like cabinet hardware, lighting or faucets.
Sizing & fit
Midsize plates are a little larger than Standard on every side. The extra coverage hides paint lines, wallpaper edges, uneven drywall cuts and the outline of a previous plate. Standard plates match the size of most builder plates and suit tighter spots.
Approximate outside dimensions (width × height) for most of our collections:
- Midsize 1-gang: about 3.13" × 5"
- Midsize 2-gang: about 5" × 5"
- Midsize 3-gang: about 6.94" × 5"
- Midsize 4-gang: about 8.5" × 5"
- Standard 1-gang: about 2.75" × 4.5"
- Standard 2-gang: about 4.56" × 4.5"
Signature and Deco Midsize plates are 4.94" tall: 1-gang 3.13" × 4.94", 2-gang 5" × 4.94", 3-gang 6.75" × 4.94", 4-gang 8.56" × 4.94". Scallop Midsize plates are larger: 1-gang 3.5" × 5.31", 2-gang 5.31" × 5.31". Each product page and our Size Guide list the size for that plate.
Decorative edges can change these by a fraction of an inch from one collection to another.
Measure your current plate first. If it covers paint lines, wallpaper edges or drywall imperfections, a Standard plate may leave them showing, so choose Midsize. If there's exposed wall or a gap around the box, Midsize is the safer choice. Standard fits most installations where the wall is clean right up to the plate.
Not sure? Midsize gives you more coverage and a more forgiving fit.
Measure the width and height of the plate you have now, and compare it with the sizes above. Then check for anything close by, like door trim, cabinets, a backsplash edge or another plate. A Midsize 1-gang plate is roughly 3/8" wider and 1/2" taller than a Standard one, so make sure there's room.
If the old plate is already off, measure the wall opening and any marks around it. The new plate should cover all of it.
Signature and Deco offer both Standard and Midsize on many configurations. Our other collections are Midsize. You'll find the size choice on each product page.
Yes. Our plates are made for standard U.S. toggle switches, rocker switches, GFCI outlets and duplex outlets, and they line up with the usual screw positions.
Not right now. Midsize is our largest size. If your opening is too large even for Midsize, a drywall repair around the box before installing will give you the cleanest result.
Metal plates are rigid, so they rest on the highest points of the wall around the box. On flat walls they sit beautifully. On uneven tile, stone or heavy texture, you may see a small gap at an edge. Tighten the screws only until the plate is snug, because overtightening won't flatten it and can mark the finish.
With wallpaper, hang the paper first and install the plate over it.
The device should sit level with the wall. If it sticks out, it can often be adjusted on its mounting screws. If it sits too deep, for example behind new tile, a box extender or spacers may be needed. If you're not comfortable adjusting electrical devices, a licensed electrician can sort it out quickly.
Installation
Most people do. Changing a wall plate usually takes a few minutes and a screwdriver, with no rewiring.
- Turn off power to the switch or outlet at the breaker.
- Remove the screws and the old plate.
- Check that the switch or outlet sits straight and level with the wall.
- Hold the new plate in place and start each screw by hand.
- Tighten until snug. Don't overtighten.
- Turn the power back on.
A hand screwdriver gives you more control than a drill and helps protect the finish.
For photos, duplex outlet steps and troubleshooting, see our Installation Guide.
Yes, we recommend it. You won't be touching any wires, but the screw terminals on a switch or outlet are live while the power is on, and a metal plate or screwdriver should never touch them. Switch off the circuit at the breaker first.
Yes. Every plate comes with matching screws, and Forge plates in Black or Warm Ivory also include a set of Gold screws. If any are missing from your order, email us at contact@riosalto.com with your order number and we'll help.
Wall plates in the U.S. use a standard #6-32 machine screw. If a recessed switch or outlet needs a longer screw, hardware stores carry #6-32 screws in longer lengths. They may not match the plate's finish as closely as the screws we include.
Yes, metal plates are widely used. A metal plate is grounded through its mounting screws to the switch or outlet, so it works as intended when that device is properly grounded. In older homes, if you're unsure about your wiring, or if a device is loose or damaged, ask a licensed electrician to take a look before installing.
Usually, yes. Swapping a plate is simple and doesn't change any wiring. Keep the original plates and screws so you can put them back when you move. Check your lease if you're unsure.
Call one if you see damaged, scorched or loose wires, if a switch or outlet is cracked, loose or warm, if the device needs to be moved or replaced, or if you simply aren't comfortable working near electrical devices.

Not every finish comes in every collection. See Which finishes come in each collection? below.
Plates with the same finish name are made to coordinate. Because of how metal finishes are applied, slight variations in color, texture or patina can occur, and these aren't defects. Other brands' "gold" or "nickel" can differ quite a bit, so if you're matching existing hardware, compare our photos in your own lighting or ask us. Screens show color differently, too.
Wipe them with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. For anything sticky, use a drop of mild soap and water, then dry. Spray cleaners onto the cloth, never onto the plate. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, bleach, ammonia and metal polishes, which can wear or strip the finish. Brushed finishes are forgiving with everyday fingerprints, and a quick wipe takes care of the rest.
We don't recommend it. Paint covers the finish and the detail that make the plate, and it tends to chip around the screws. If you're after a color, take a look at our Black, Warm Ivory or Brushed Nickel finishes.
Our plates are made for indoor use, and kitchens and bathrooms are fine. Wipe away splashes and steam so they don't dry on the finish. They aren't weatherproof, so please don't use them outdoors or where they'll get wet regularly.
